Editorial Review:

Product Description:

All the beautiful people live in the idyllic village of Stepford, Connecticut, an affluent suburban Eden populated with successful, satisfied hubbys and their beautiful, dutiful wives. For Joanna Eberhart, a recent arrival with her husband and two children, it all seems too perfect to be true -- from the sweet, accommodating Welcome Wagon lady to all those cheerful, friendly faces in the supermarket checkout lines. But just beneath the town's flawless surface, something is sordid and wrong -- something abominable with roots in the local Men's Association. And it may already be too late for Joanna to save herself from being devoured by Stepford's hideous perfection.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stepford Wives
Ira Levin's Stepford Wives, a story that has inspired two films and entered the lexicon is little more than a long novella. It comes in around 30,000 words and therefore wouldn't even qualify for a winning Nanowrimo entry. It's the sort of thriller where no words are wasted; the narrative is more like a transcript of someone telling a story than a well crafted narration. It can be read in about ninety minutes and even with knowing the punchline (or being able to figure it out) it is still a very ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - This Book is Just Okay
I thought this book was entertaining, but it's not worth paying full price for.

First of all, this book is only around 30,000 words long -- less than a third the size of a regular novel. This is more a novella than a full-sized book. I literally read this book in ninety minutes.

Second, I'm guessing that the average reader already knows how this book ends, due to the massive publicity of the movies based on it. This minimizes the suspense value. If you know exactly ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Forget the 2004 movie
WOW. If you have seen the 2004 movie, you have to read this book. The book and movie are not so far different that you don't recognise one in the other, but the ending is so different. The 2004 movie is bright and funny, and the book is dark and there is little to find funny. The husband is also a different person to the one in the 2004 movie, and I really think the movie lost the whole POINT of the book. I don't see Nicole in the role of Joanna, having now met the original lady in the novel. I shall ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Okay - had movie too much on my mind
I feel that this book was spoiled by my having seen the movie (remake with Nicole Kidman) and thus knowing from the beginning of the book what was going on. What would it have been like if I had read the book knowing nothing about the movie? I think then it would have been a fascinating and chilling book. So I found myself comparing book to movie as I was reading. I knew the movie ending was different, but I didn't realize how much. I think I actually prefer the movie ending or at least something a little ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "We're in the Town that Time Forgot"
About fifteen years ago, when I was in my mid-teens, I read this novel for the first time and enjoyed the experience. That is why after watching the movie with Nicole Kidman and being thoroughly disappointed, I decided to reread the book and see if I maintained my opinion about Levin's work. The result was that I found the novel to be even better than I remembered it to be, and was amazed by the author's ability to transmit so much in such a short work. He certainly does not beat around the bush!
