Editorial Review:

Product Description:

The latest masterwork from one of the leading writers of suspense . . . New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell returns with a chilling tale of the law gone wrong and a kidnapping that threatens more than one life.

The Wrong Hostage

Orphaned at thirteen, Grace Silva clawed her way out of poverty and violence to become one of the most respected judges on the federal bench. Grace believes in the rule of law -- lives it, breathes it. She has always been buttoned up and buttoned down.

Except once.

Joe Faroe has learned that laws are made by politicians, and politicians are all too human. He believes in the innocents, the ones getting ground up by governments that are too polarized or too corrupt to protect their own citizens. He's been through the political meat grinder himself. It cost him his career, his freedom, and the woman who still haunts him. Since then Faroe has worked outside the rules and politics of government as a kidnap specialist for St. Kilda Consulting, a Manhattan-based global business that concentrates on the shadow world where governments can't go. He is good at his work -- intelligent, confident, ruthless.

Until a friend dies trying to kill him.

Now Faroe is out of the business. Retired. He's through trying to save a world that doesn't want to be saved.

Then Grace comes to him, past and present collide, and Faroe finds himself sucked back into the shadows, tracking a violent killer who holds the life of Grace's son in his bloody hands.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Page turner
Great book. There isn't a lag in the story, it just keeps going till the end. A very good page turner. I will be reading more of Elizabeth Lowell's books.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Heroine is a Pain
I know a lot of the reviews depict our heroine as this strong woman who pulled herself up to a judgeship. From what I read it was bought for her by her husband's money dealings. Why would this "strong wonderful woman" get attached and then stay with Ted? Doesn't seem the kind of man she would marry. Joe disgusts her but he is who she calls when Lane is held hostage. Then she argues with him about everything (things a federal judge should be aware of.) She is nasty to him most of the time and ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A 'dopey' story about dope...
This hasn't been my month for discovering authors I've not read before. First, a so-so effort by Brad Meltzer(see my previous review) and now this mediocre 'romantic crime drama' by Elizabeth Lowell. It appears she's written similar (and better) books. I found this one to be implausible(like some other critics), as well as repetitive(lots of 'threatening phone calls') and simply boring. The 'rekindled romance' of Grace and Joe starts off so badly, it's hard to believe there could ever have been any ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Border of Evil
The stakes are high for Grace Silva, an all American Irish/Hispanic girl, who is about to be appointed a federal judge, when her ex-husband defrauds a Mexican drug lord. Their son become collateral for an exchange of valuables, but faces death when his father cannot be located. Grace turns to Joe Faroe, an old love for help.
The sparks fly as a determined woman confronts the reluctant Joe, who has retired from the rescue business after being betrayed by his best friend. Joe, a specialist in kidnappings ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - storyteller
The book started out slow. I know it takes time to establish a character because I'm an author myself. I actually felt more of a connection with the son, Lane. Parts were predictable. The behind the scenes look at the border and the way the U.S. and Mexico feed off each other is eye-opening. All in all I had a hard time keeping track of the characters because they didn't stick with me. Writing a book is hard work. Good luck to the author.
