In his accessible and inspiring book, Batstone carefully weaves the narratives of activists and those in bondage in a way that not only raises awareness of the modern-day slave trade, but also serves as a call to action. With 2007 bringing the 200th anniversary of the climax of the 19th century abolitionist movement, the world pays tribute to great visionary figures such as William Wilberforce of the United Kingdom and American Frederick Douglass for their remarkable strides toward framing slavery as a moral issue that people of good conscience could not tolerate. This anniversary serves not only as a commemorative date for battles won against slavery, but also as a reminder that slavery and bondage still persist in the 21st century. An estimated 27 million people around the globe suffer in situations of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation from which they cannot free themselves. Trafficking in people has become increasingly transnational in scope and highly lucrative. After illegal drug sales and arms trafficking, human trafficking is today the third most profitable criminal activity in the world, generating $31 billion annually. As many as half of all those trafficked worldwide for sex and domestic slavery are children under 18 years of age. Average Rating:

Often, reading about this topic can be depressing at best ... but by focusing on (or at least switching frequently to) the stories of successful contemporary abolitionists, this book avoids that. Instead, it manages to create a sense of hope coupled with obligation--a sense reinforced by the list of suggestions and organizational contact information at the end. Read this. Then, pass your copy along to a friend, and ask that it keep getting read. Rating: - The Best Introduction to the Global Slave TradeNot for Sale is the best introduction to the global slave trade I've read. It is full of heart-wrenching stories and information about how the trade works. It is an easy read and David Batstone did a very good job breaking down some complex information and theories and presenting them in an easy to understand way. This is an excellent book if you are trying to learn what exactly the global slave trade is and who it effects and how you might be able to get involved. Rating: - Yes, slavery today and more than ever before!David Batstone presents a deep look at human trafficking and slavery. We seemed to think that the U.S. Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement actually fixed the problem. However, these ancient practices of our wonderful human nature have not gone away. They are even stronger than ever. There are more than 27 million people who are entrapped within this system. The Romans had nothing in comparison. As the book is read, it may be realized that many of the "Asian" porn-stars are in this industry ... Read More Rating: - A Must Read for Socially Aware People! This work leaves one feeling enraged at officials and corrupt governments no matter where they are located. To know that the United States is a prime market for human slaves is appalling. The author lays the facts out clearly, his examples are extraordinary and the reader is given as complete a picture of the horrors faced by women, girls, and boys. "Not for Sale" is a book I plan to use in the classroom to emphasize the horrors that await children/people in all walks of life, but ... Read More Rating: - Still recommend to readInterestingly written and bringing the problem of human trafficking and all its related issues to light. Educational reading for sure. I was shocked to read about restaurant labor in this country being trafficked, as one example. It just read too much like a fictional novel at some times. If you look to learn about this problem in an entertaining and easy way I can recommend this book. If you look for more indepth facts and figures leave it alone. In association with Amazon.com | |
