Everyone I met said I needed this book to do well on Step I. And it turns out, I needed this book to do well on Step I. Buy this book. Memorize this book. This book is your key to success. That being said, I don't think you need to buy the latest and greatest edition. I took the exam in 2007 but used a 2005 version of the book, and I was fine.

This is a great book and is ALL YOU NEED, in addition to a QUESTION BANK. If you put in the time to learn this material and learn from your mistakes on missed questions on your question bank, you will do well on the actual exam. What I did was after reviewing each section, taking practice sets of questions and writing the things I missed into the margins in the appropriate sections of the book. This is THE book for preparing for the USMLE Step 1. Its new systems-based organization make it an amazing product for reviewing for the test. Write in it and refer to it as you go through your first and second years in medical school, and you will be glad to have done it.

This is a great comprehensive review that gives you information in the most concise and easy to remember format. Be sure to check the associated web page for the errata though.
