Editorial Review:

Product Description:
John A. Van de Walle has written a book that helps readers make sense of mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach mathematics to children K to 8. Elementatry and Middle School Mathematics consists of 16 chapters reflecting the view that all mathematics can be taught through a problem-solving approach that motivates children and builds their confidence as they learn. This book thoroughly discusses the new standards and clearly develops four key aspects of teaching mathematics: the nature of mathematics as a science of pattern and order; an understanding of how children learn mathematics; a problem solving view of teaching mathematics; and specific methods for integrating assessment with instruction. Simple yet effective classroom activities are woven throughout the chapters as well as suggestions for technology and literature. For teachers, future teachers, and educators. nt Code -- F

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Useful tool for soon to-be elementary school teachers
I bought this book for a 400 level college course in teaching elementary math. It provides several different ways of presenting and thinking about a concept for the teacher to be familiar with. The book also lists hundreds of short activities and a ton of online resources and supplements. As far as a text book goes it is easy to read and comprehend.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Book!
I really think this book has a lot to offer for elementary edu. students. It gives a variety of ways to teach kids math. I used some of the techniques on my own kids and they were surprised to see some great alternative ways to learn how to do math problems differently. Definitely a book I will keep to use in the future!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - This is not the correct book I ordered, but too late to return.
The picture used to show this book was incorrect. I ended up getting an older edition. This book will not fit my class. Unable to return book. Make sure seller has the right picture for the front of the book before buying.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Teaching Resource Book
I bought this book for the Math Methods class in my credential program. I think it will be a book I will use as a great resource when teaching Math. I highly recommend this book to any teacher that teaches or will teach math.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Math Methods Book
I have only worked with this book for a few weeks but am very pleased with what I am experiencing. There are numerous graphs, suggestions with ways to engage students, and internet links are available for teaching suggestions and math games.

This book clearly explains the material using visual supports like graphs and diagrams in bright colors. Internet sights for lesson suggestions, assessment and lesson reinforcing games. A great tool and a good resource that I plan to keep on hand.
