Schwarz not only presents a powerful and original reading of Joyce's great epic novel, but discusses it in terms of a dialogue between recent and more traditional literary theory. Focusing on what he calls the odyssean reader, Schwarz demonstrates how the experience of reading Ulysses involves responding both to traditional plot and character, and to the novel's stylistic experiments. Schwarz shows how the novel creates a reader who must make subtle and deliberate discriminations in his odyssean journey through the novel. Book Description: Reissued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bloomsday, this now classic text includes a new preface by author Daniel Schwarz taking account of scholarly and critical developments since its original publication. It shows how the now-important issues of postcolonialism, feminism, Irish Studies and urban culture are addressed within the text, as well as a discussion of how the book can be approached by both beginners and seasoned readers. I am reading the 1987, and may order this "centenary" re-issue as well, as I have heavily marked my original. You will not regret having this book as guide for reflection and comprehension. YOu will grow to understand and to love Joyce's otherwise easily dismissed brilliance, hidden under the bushel basket of academics on their own agendas. ... Read More Rating: - Re-reading Ulysses: for the re-repeat reader of JoyceThe title's misleading: this isn't for a first or even second or third-time reader of Ulysses. While many books now offer the novice "training wheels" to steady a ride through the Hibernian labyrinth, fewer meet the demands of intermediate readers in an accessible manner that can be recommended to non-academic, amateur Joyceans. While much freer of jargon than many of his scholarly peers, Schwarz' study is not a book to skim. I'm not even sure that RJU is the perfect answer for the repeat reader--much ...
