Product Description:
Chad Brown did hard time in the National Football League, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Oilers, and New Orleans Saints. But for the past seven seasons, he has been one of the NFL's top officials, working in the middle of the line of scrimmage, known by those who do battle there as the "meat grinder." Chad has gone head to helmet with the biggest, baddest, and most offbeat players in the league, making the calls that can make or break seasons and sometimes careers, but always calling them as he sees them. From his early days playing pickup football in the sandlots of South Dallas to Super Bowl XXXIII, Inside the Meat Grinder follows one of the NFL's most prominent officials both one and off the field.

Born and raised in South Dallas, Chad Brown started playing football on his neighborhood streets in the early 60's. He made his way from street hero to high school hotshot to All-American at East Texas State University and finally to a draft pick of the Steelers. After a roller coaster ride of a professional career and a brief stint as a college line coach (his team went 0-10), Chad decided to see how he would look in stripes. He became an official. Beginning with his first call in a Pop Warner game to Chad's NFL debut as an umpire in an intense 1992 Redskins-Cowboys Monday night match-up, Inside the Meat Grinderputs you right on the field as you dodge flying 300-pound human projectiles and deal head on with the trash talk and the big egos of the NFL. You will also meet the "All-Chad Brown All-Meat Grinder Team," made up of the most likely to exasperate even the most experienced NFL officials. This book will take you inside the world of NFL officiating as never before, as four of the league's finest reveal their lives as the NFL's "police" in a no-holds barred "Round Table" discussion.

After a season filled with botched coin tosses and phantom touchdowns, Inside the Meat Grinder sheds a brand-new light, an unprecedented perspective, on NFL officials, the men who never get the respect they deserve.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A NICE BUT NOTHING NEW LOOK AT AN NFL OFFICIAL
CHAD BROWN DOES A NICE TELLING US ABOUT HIS LIFE IN FOOTBALL AS A PLAYER AND REFEREE. I FOUND THE MOST INTERESTING PARTS OF THIS BOOK WERE HIS WEEKLY PREPARATION FOR EACH GAME. THE WEEKLY TESTING AND GRADING OF EACH OFFICIAL WAS VERY INTERESTING. ANOTHER PLUS WAS THE WAY HOW HE KEEPS HIMSELF IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION BY EXERCISE AND HEALTHY EATING. THE PART ABOUT HIS URINE TESTING FOR DRUGS WAS ALSO AMUSING. BUT I REALLY WANTED MORE ABOUT THE GAME ACTION INSIDE THE MEAT GRINDER AS HE PUTS IT. ALOT ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Buy a different book!
As a h.s. football official, I buy EVERY book on officiating or by an official that comes out. In the case of "Meat Grinder," I wish I'd made an exception.

It is written in 3rd person by someone who'd have a hard time writing a decent 5-page h.s. English paper. I was literally bored of the book by the third page and THREW IT OUT!

The copy I bought was taken OUT of the collection of a library...that should've tipped me off. Trust me, this book is TERRIBLE.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Telling it the way it is
Chad Brown brings the life of an NFL official into light. He talks about growing up playing football in the streets to shuffling colleges, waiting to hear his name called out in the NFL draft. Chad is eventually cut and tried a short stint in coaching, but finds his home in officiating. As a young official I find this book very inspirational. Very good and quick read, includes a neat view of walking onto the field on of an NFL stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent content, Football what a sport!!!
Mr Brown,
Thank you. The information you have provided, in this well crafted chronicle of life as an NFL Official, is well documented and expresses your true love and passion for the game. As a former collegete player and current High school official this is a must read for ALL students of the game. I would urge coaches, players and parents to add this book to there educational libary. If players could see the game as officials see the game (officials that have competed in this sport) it would ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Flagged for illegal formation
This sloppily-written, poorly-edited effort nonetheless provides a valuable inside look at the National Football League. Through the eyes of umpire Chad Brown, I gained a better understanding of the difficulties, challenges and rewards which constitute the professional life of the "zebras". Mr. Brown responds convincingly to the complaint, "How can those geezers keep up with the young, fast athletes of the NFL?" And he demonstrates that the 100-plus NFL officials would be their own harshest critics, were ... Read More
