Combining outstanding investigative reporting with exclusive insider information, this fascinating expose travels from the court rooms to the canvassing boards to the corridors of the legislature, as Tapper paints vivid portraits of all the major players, revealing shocking details about what happened behind closed doors, what deals were cut, and who did what to whom. Finally, Tapper delivers his wickedly perceptive insight onto the two men at the center of it all: Al Gore--the cold, ruthless, and uninspiring technocrat who constantly sold out his friends, staffers, and values in pursuit of power--and George W. Bush, the man who would be President--a brilliant schmoozer and deft liar with the intellectual inquisitiveness of the average fern. Expect Down and Dirty to ignite a firestorm of debate now that the reality of the Bush presidency dawns on the American public. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Dull And Plodding: The Plot To Bore The ReaderThis cliche-ridden, clunky collection of quotes from the author's favored sources offers nothing that wasn't covered ad nauseum in the newspapers and the cable shout shows as it was happening in December 2000. Tapper offers no new insights, which could be tolerated in a more qualified writer. But Tapper doesn't have the skills to handle the material, and the result is a poorly written screed with all the punch of a press release for the Gore campaign. Reviewers sometimes lament that trees were felled ... Read More Rating: - Unparalleled journalistic integrityAdmittedly, Tapper clearly leans to the left -- if "lean" is a strong enough word. But that doesn't stop him from aggressively investigating and reporting on many, many details (dirty and otherwise) of the 2000 election fiasco, including the many failures of the Gore team and the many manipulations of the Bush team. I had been pretty interested in the subject, but his writing is completely engaging, revealing everything in such exquisite detail that it is impossible to put down. While the books reads ... Read More Rating: - A solid recountingWorth reading but not by zealots of either side. It's a pretty even handed recitation of the tactics of both sides. Tapper's detailed interviews with partcipants allow for a good deal of insight on the various battles. The book confirms that most of the on the ground operatives are interested only in winning and most definitely not in truth, right or wrong. The serious tactical missteps are laid out very well. So well in several cases that it makes you wonder how how these otherwise ... Read More Rating: - Don't BotherThis book is a classic example of extracting a pound of lies from an ounce of truth. It is riddled with cliches and unsupported conclusions. It isn't even a good read. The accounts of the Florida election in the news give a much better feeling and understanding of those events. Don't waste your time with this. Rating: - A waste of time, money, ink and paperA poor excuse for journalism - Mr. Tapper should keep to telling the story without the colorful references to "Bushies", "Gorbies" and his grating personal observances of figures central to the issue. I thought the penchant for shock chapter titles and petty personalizations fell by the wayside in 8th-grade creative writing, but sadly that is apparently not the case. I tried to read this book - I knew it had to get better... By page 200 it was in the rubbish can. In association with Amazon.com | |
