When her father insists that she continue the first lady's social duties for the new bachelor president, she instead resolves to break out of her glamorous prison and live life as a normal American. She knows that she can't elude the Secret Service forever, but every moment of anonymity is priceless. Mat Jorik is a pushover for a female in trouble. When his ex-wife dies and leaves him her two daughters, he agrees to drive them from the East Coast to their grandmother's Iowa home. They haven't gone far when he takes pity on another female and offers her a ride in return for her care of the baby and teenager. Nealy accepts his offer. Little does she know when she climbs into the Winnebago that she's about to lose her heart to two kids and a handsome man who she thinks is a steelworker. When Nealy discovers his real job, Mat may wish he'd confessed earlier. In the meantime, they're off on an adventure, the likes of which Nealy's never had before. But the Secret Service is hot on Nealy's trail and despite her best efforts, she's bound to be caught. The question is, what will happen to this slapdash family when they're found? Wonderful characters are what you expect from Phillips, and that's exactly what you get here: a heroine with strong convictions about everything from letting a baby eat cheese curls off the floor to morals in politics; a hero who adamantly denies that he likes females even as he's saving and taking care of them; and two children that will pluck your heartstrings like they've never been plucked before. They spar their way through a wild trip on the road to happiness, making for a book that's funny, romantic, and just plain fun to read. --Lois Faye Dyer Product Description: How does the most famous woman in the world hide in plain sight? ![]() Rating: - I enjoyed it but she could do betterThe author is funny and the plot is captivating as always, but Susan Elizabeth Phillips has a bad habit of creating the same kind of situation in a lot of her books. The plot is always different and the humor is always there and the characters are always intresting and new with flaws like any other human being, and yet she repeats herself to the point where you want to yell at the author and tell her to stop already. It's not any less fun to read. It's always a little different. But When you come ... Read More Rating: - I loved everything about this book!I've read almost all of SEP's books and this has to be one of my favorites. At first I thought the concept of the story was a little unbelievable, but this author pulls it off. Nealy is a good heroine, but I was extremely impressed with Mat. I liked his big-guy hot temper, but soft heart. All the secondary characters are good. This will definitely go on my re-read list. Rating: - Could have used more romance! I liked this book, it was well written and had some really funny dialogue. I loved the interaction between Mat and the kids. I actually thought that was more interesting than his interaction with Nealy. I just didn't feel the sparks between these two. I liked Mat's character much more than I liked Nealy's character. She just didn't have any ooomph. The epilogue was good. I like when an epilogue goes into the future a ways, this one goes 8 years down the road. I get disappointed when I read a book ... So enjoyable, it kept me up past my desired bedtime. She is one of my favorite authors. Story brief: The President dies in office. His wife is asked to continue the job of first lady for the vice president who is single. She doesn't want this job and uses a disguise to escape the White House and travels as an ordinary person. While traveling she joins Matt who is driving for several days to deliver two orphaned girls to a relative. Sexual language: ... Read More Rating: - An American Roman Holiday spoiled by a rushed and silly ending. The beginning of First Lady is promising. Widowed First Lady Cornelia (Nealy) Case, driven by grief, lack of privacy, and burn out after a lifetime of public service, escapes from the White House and flees into the big beautiful heartland of America, where she meets a man she cannot resist and two children who terrify her while capturing her heart. I was prepared to sympathize with Nealy's desire for freedom and even willingly suspended disbelief when, in spite of all the caution she must ... Read More In association with Amazon.com | |
