Katherine Louise of Risen Glory Plantation, South Carolina, travels to New York disguised as a boy to eliminate her newly named guardian and regain control of her beloved plantation. Unfortunately for Kit, Baron Cain proves difficult to kill, and when he discovers her identity, Baron promptly stashes her in a New York finishing school for young ladies. Three years later, Kit returns to Risen Glory to find that Baron has restored the plantation to its former prosperity. Baron scarcely recognizes the hoyden he remembers in the mature, 21-year-old Kit. The instant passion that flares between them is unwanted by both and equally undeniable. Pushed to the edge, Baron threatens to banish Kit from her beloved plantation, and she commits an impulsive, nearly unforgivable act. Baron's response is equally impossible and thrusts the pair into an intolerable situation. Wild and willful, passionate and wary, the two lovers must somehow find a way to overcome pride and distrust before there can be any likelihood of a loving resolution. Readers who love Phillips's highly successful contemporary romances will be just as enthralled with this historical romance. Lush landscapes, complex characters, a charming cast of secondary players, and a subplot that takes a look at the effects of slavery and racist attitudes in the Old South all add up to an excellent novel. A rewrite of an early title, Just Imagine is classic historical romance at its best. --Lois Faye Dyer Product Description: The War Between the States may be over for the rest of the country, but not for Kit Weston. Disguised as a boy, she's come to New York City to kill Baron Cain, the man who stands between her and Risen Glory, the South Carolina home she loves. But unknown to Kit, the Yankee war hero is more than her bitterest enemy—he's also her guardian. And he'll be a lot harder to kill than she's figured on . . . Believing that Kit's a boy, Cain offers the grubby rapscallion a job in his stable. But he has no idea what he's in for, and it's not long before the hero of Missionary Ridge discovers the truth. His scamp of a stable boy is a strong-willed, violet-eyed beauty who's hell-bent on driving him crazy. Two hard-headed, passionate people . . . Two stubborn opponents with tender souls . . . Sometimes wars of the heart can only be won through the sweetest of surrenders. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - skip this oneIf this was my first book by this author, I would have stopped here. The main character 'Baron' was so cruel to 'Kit' I actually skipped to the end of the book to block out the almost rape scenes. 'Just Imagine' that Phillips other books are better, and read another one! Rating: - Heartwrenching, but so wonderful!I think this is her only historical romance, but it is so awesome. The story is heartwrenching, but you are so rooting for all the characters in it that it is so heartwarming also. The love between Kit Weston and Baron Cain is believable and hot. I couldn't get enough of their story! Read this one; it's different from her other books, but the story is sweet and makes you have a good cry. Rating: - dreadful!I have enjoyed most of SEP's contemporary romance so I decided to give her historical a try. I must say I am very disappointed at this book and I am so very glad she's improved so very much since the publication of this book in 1984. The story is essentially the Civil War version of typical medieval Scott-English conflict romance in the 80s where the hero and heroine engaged in battle of "hating you yet wanting to lick every inch of your body scenario". The hero and heroine spent so much time disliking ... Read More Rating: - Not my favI am a huge fan of SEP's Chicago Stars series and have always admired the banter and humor in those books. They are fairly light-hearted stories. I had a little harder time enjoying this book because I really didn't like the hero or heroine. The story is well written in SEP's ususal flowing style, but both the hero and heroine took themselves too seriously. Maybe it was just the time frame - there wasn't much to laugh about in that post Civil War period. There was also a lot of angst and verbal sparring ... Read More Rating: - Not very fulfilling. It was ok, but so far my least favorite of her books. The characters and plot weren't that good. Maybe it was due to being one of her early works. This story was first printed in 1984 and titled "Risen Glory." It was reprinted in 2001 with the current title. This book lacks her witty dialogue which I love in her later books. CAUTION SPOILER: I didn't understand the characters during their marriage as to why they were so cold to each other. I didn't care for her actions in the end to prove her love to him. It seemed that they got back together ... Read More In association with Amazon.com | |
