Editorial Review:

Product Description:

Dr. Neff writes in the preface, "I thought about what I had done to prepare for the Exam: two review courses, flashcards, a variety of texts. I realized, however, there is no source of information that tells you what the "wrong" answers are…what are the curveballs likely to be thrown at you during the exam." After realizing that he had done all he could have as a student in preparation for the exam, it became apparent to Dr. Neff that the real problem was that he was merely memorizing material for the exam and not preparing for what will appear. Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam offers this to students by not only covering the concepts frequently addressed on the test, but it also includes the "common curveballs and strikeouts" to look out for – the unexpected problem or seemingly benign action (or inaction) that could result in a missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis (and thus in failure to pass the exam).

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - gets you thinking...
As stated in other reviews, this is clearly not a one-stop study guide for the certifying exam. It does, however, get you to think as you will be asked to during the examination. Tons of curve balls for you to mull over as you are studying. The exam is dynamic and this resource gets you to think in a dynamic way. It is an outline. I think that this with a reference text/safe answers is adequate material with which to prepare for the orals, old exam questions as well.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Nice, portable supplement
Taking the boards on 01/29/2008. I will update once I know my results.

This book is an excellent study outline, and helps fill in some gaps that the 'other review book' leaves out. I enjoyed the fact that there is ample space on the topic pages to fill in with my own notes gleaned from Mastery of Surgery, Cameron's Current Surgical Therapy, and Sabiston's Textbook of Surgery.

Pros:
Nice format with things to focus on and avoid - helps to organize thought process

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good quick review but missing the details
This will give you a lot of possible questions but the details to answer the questions are often missing. It is an ok book but you will definitely need to study more

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - you better read a text book
This book is a good companion to your prep for the oral boards, but the most important is to read between the lines and refer to a text book during the preparation.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Nice Addition
Not a replace ment for a good surgical text. Simply a nice addition to your oral review books. Quick, nice organization ... but very brief, no details. Does a good job of letting you know what can get you into trouble if you DO say or if you DON'T say.
