Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Review:
Who invented numbers? What are prime numbers? How do you do long division? How do you calculate percentages? If your child is asking for help with these questions, and you're feeling a little rusty, this is the perfect book to have on hand--for yourself and your inquisitive fourth- to sixth-grader. Colorful and accessible, this clear guide defines math terms and concepts with both visual and written description. For example, authors Anne Zeman and Kate Kelly describe a fraction as "one or more parts of a whole or a set," and they also offer the image of a necklace of beads to show how each bead is part of a set. The book is divided into the following sections: "Numbers and Number Systems" (ancient number systems, the decimal system); "Basic Math Functions" (math symbols, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, rounding and estimation, averages and medians, properties and orders, story problems); "Measurement" (measuring length, distance, weight, perimeter and area, volume, temperature, time); "Geometry" (geometric shapes, symmetry, congruence, similarity); "Money and Monetary Systems" (U.S. currency, other currency systems); "Graphs" (plotting information, four kinds of graphs); "Statistics and Probability"; "Computers and Calculators" (the abacus, simple calculators, the computer); and a complete index. Information for the Scholastic Homework Reference Series was gathered from current textbooks, national curricula, and the assistance of the UFT Dial-A-Teacher staff. (Ages 9 and older)

Product Description:
A ready reference is updated to reflect changes in the math curriculum, such as using regrouping rather than borrowing and carrying, in an accessible format that highlights new interiors. Original."

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great reference for homeschoolers
We checked this book out of the library, and I love it. I recently started homeschooling my 4th grader. Teaching math has proved a challenge for me--I have trouble helping him understand key concepts. I found this book at the library and it has become indispensible. I'm now buying a copy so that I don't need to keep checking it out.

I too have found a couple of errors, but since I am referring to it, not my son, it has not been a problem.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This is the best book!
I love this book. I bought a copy for my oldest child 8 years ago to help her understand various math concepts and help with homework as needed. All three of my children have used it over the years and I am once again introducing it to my students at our local elementary school. The visual examples and wording in the book really help children to understand. The index is very thorough and allows the child to find what they need quickly. It's a great book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent math reference for 4th to 6th grade
This book provides an excellent overview of math through 6th grade. Each topic is covered clearly and concisely in 2 to 4 pages: idea overview, verbal description, formulae, picture demonstrating the algorithm, and one or more examples. Pictures clearly demonstrate the idea, and are colorful and creative, adding to interest. Descriptions are clear yet brief, as is the entire book. Does not include problems to be worked by the student. Many topics covered, including addition, subtraction, long ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Homeschooler's Blessing
My mathphobic 11 year old went wild when he saw this book. He loved it!!! And as a 20 year veteran of homeschooling, I find it's a fantastic resource - I don't know how we ever lived without it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Terrific Book!
I am an adult and teacher and this book helps me! It is great to use with students and to send home with them. I highly recommend the whole series for home and the classroom.
