Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Most leaders who make it to the top possess characteristics that are all too human: they have politically incorrect attitudes, are conflicted, and play politics to get their way. Written by leading management consultant Anthony F. Smith, The Taboos of Leadership reveals the rarely discussed realities of leadership—the secrets that leaders just cannot admit to publicly for fear of losing power, self-respect, or even their jobs. This revelatory book will help both leaders and followers achieve real understanding and co-create a two-way street culture of openness, trust, and improved performance in their organizations.

The Taboos of Leadership discloses ten guarded secrets that leaders can’t discuss, even with their closest constituents, including:   charisma shouldn’t make a difference . . . but it does; women make better leaders . . . when that’s what they really want to do; blatant self-interest is dangerous . . . in followers, not leaders; thou shalt not play favorites with friends and family . . . except when it makes a lot of sense; and more.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Women Make Better Leaders
I heard Anthony F. Smith speak this week in San Diego which influenced me to buy his book. Taboo #4 is Women Make Better Leaders. Smith's discussion is around the importance of emotional intelligence in the leaders of today and the future. He talks about how women are naturally better wired for this EQ capability and then tempers that by saying that most women don't want to be at the top. They would rather be doing something else, aren't willing to pay the price and don't need the "WIN" like ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The cost of herding sacred cows
Anthony F. Smith discusses common workforce taboos that can create organizational problems for leaders. These taboos - from sensitive subjects like nepotism or sexism to sacred corporate myths like the superhuman CEO - provoke such strong reactions that many people can't even discuss them or admit the truth about them. Emotion simply stands in the way. Smith does a good job of helping leaders see both sides of these issues and explains how failure to address them may be holding back your organization. ... Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - makes you want to leave corporate life
This book covers one consultant's experience with corporate leaders and the taboos that surround those leaders and organizations. It makes it sound like all corporate leaders are greedy, dishonest, corrupt, and have no integrity. I found this book to be very demotivating and if what is said in this book is true, it makes me not wish to continue to climb the corporate ladder any higher. I don't believe this book represents all leaders and sheds a negative light on being a leader. Although, I could be wrong.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - How to talk about the things you can't discuss at work, and why its important that you do
We all know that there are subjects you simply can't talk about in public, within your family, or with certain friends. They are topics that are so volatile that simply bringing them up ignites a fire that is completely destructive before anything worthwhile can be gained. This interesting little book by Anthony F. Smith addresses 10 taboos in the world of business that leaders still have to address. Smith talks about the each taboo, what the issues are, and how you might be able deal with them in a constructive ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A ground-breaking book on leadership
It seems that so many new books on leadership simply re-hash well-known theories and concepts. Not so with this book. Anthony Smith confronts sensitive issues such as politics in the workplace and the challenge of balancing work and family responsibilities with candor and a heavy dose of reality. A must-read book for anybody who wants to better understand what really makes successful leaders tick.
