But the beating turns to murder, and the murder into lust and desperation between Lydia and an underworld clean-up man. Meanwhile, overgrown frat boy car thieves take up cop killing as a side hobby. When these paths cross, a horror show of violence unfolds as they all slide into a hell of their own design, surrounded by the neon and noise of the casino strip on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Violent, vivid, life at hyper-speed. This debut novel from the editor of Plots with Guns is a noir nightmare that asks how much is too much in a relationship, and what is the cost of leaving? Ken Bruen calls it 'the darkest song I've ever read'. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - PyschosomaticNiel Smith is my cousin so obviously I have no negative points to make. This book delves into the land of darkness of the mind and then goes even further. It's a non-stop whirlwind of strange events and you won't be able to put it down in anticipation for what you will find around the next dark corner. Rating: - Ugly and BeautifulIf you like cat mysteries keep moving. This one isn't for you. Anthony Neil Smith, editor of the late great Plots with Guns webzine, holds nothing back in this unflinching, violent tale of very bad people doing very bad things. It's 180 pages of gunshots, kinky sex, and broken bones. The last few pages left me gasping for air. Rating: - Movie! This one screams MOVIE! Preferably by David Lynch. I read this baby cover to cover; there was no putting it down. James Ellroy brutality, Elmore Leonard dialogue, Victor Gischler humor ... that's a trifecta with an undeniable payoff. Anthony Neil Smith stomps onto the scene in this volcano of a debut. You'll have to trust me, I'm no misogynist and this one turned me on from the get-go ... pure dynamite. Not only was she and the plot believable (you just have to know people other than those ... Read More Rating: - MisogynisticWell,I'm a big fan of pulp fiction but this one is fishwrap only. A protagonist with no arms and legs who gets done to in every possible way by men, and is supposed to have manipulative powers? You have got to be kidding. I may be male but I have utmost respect for women as equals in the work place, home, and world, and this portrayal made me sick. I've read some of Smith's other work on the Web: dead women wrapped in shower curtains and so on, and I think he's a woman-hater with nothing much to ... Read More Rating: - Very fineI have got to say that this book is pretty kickass. I'm only an occasional crime fiction reader, so I'm not predisposed to like this sort of book, but this is a great read--big rushes all throughout and expertly crafted. Of course if you're on the prudish side, you might want to choose something else, but this one works for me. Definitely worth a look. In association with Amazon.com | |
