Most of us have no idea what's really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know - like that physical activity boosts your brain power. How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget - and so important to repeat new information? Is it true that men and women have different brains? In "Brain Rules", Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule - what scientists know for sure about how our brains work - and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.Medina's fascinating stories and sense of humour breathe life into brain science. You'll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You'll peer over a surgeon's shoulder as he proves that we have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You'll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can't tie his own shoes. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Interesting read on how the adult brain functionsThis book provided some informative insights into how the brain reacts and responds to various stimuli. Most of the book's points were very interesting. Certain portions of the book were a bit tedious to read and I found myself skipping to the end of the chapter(s) to read the main points. Rating: - Interesting overviewThis book is an interesting read. I didn't learn anything new, but it did read nicely and I would suggest it as a good overview into learning. It's told in a readable, likable way - kind of similar feeling to reading Malcolm Gladwell or Freakanomics...it is a lite tretment of the topic, but intersting nonetheless. Rating: - Brain Plasticity Made EasyThe book arrived earlier than anticipated, a new product. It reads well and the information presented is presented in straight forward fashion tro be useful at many levels.Your Brain: The Missing Manual Rating: - Complex brain research made easyBrain Rules is about nothing more than the brain itself - how it works, how it stores memories, how it processes information, and more. It takes on modern research, scientific theory, and academic matters. And here's the joy of it: it takes all that intricate, complex material, and spins it into accessible, compelling material that anyone can enjoy. As a teacher, I found the book fascinating for its insights into the way the mind works, but I can't think of anyone who wouldn't find the material useful ... Read More Rating: - Brain RulesFascinating book - well written for a non technical reader. Have heard Dr. Medina speak at the WP&BC, Seattle, April 2010 and he used one of the important points he discusses in the book to keep anyone from falling asleep or tuning him out. I will be incorporating the idea into my training/education classes. A must read book for anyone who wants to understand how brain functioning is enhanced by exercise. Lots of easily understood ideas for business and home. In association with Amazon.com | |
