I knew that Florence Nightingale was the mother of modern nursing, but until I read this volume in the Our People series I did not know that nursing was not a respected profession in the 19th century. The daughter of a wealthy English family who was born in Florence, Italy, she changed the way nurses care for the sick and injured. Believing she was called by God to do special work, it was while caring for her sick grandmother and others that Nightingale decided to become a nurse.
