Each carries a desperate hope--and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands. A stunning tour de force, this Hugo Award-winning novel is the first volume in a remarkable new science fiction epic by the author of The Hollow Man. Product Description: On the planet called Hyperion, beyond the law and the reach of 28th-century science, waits the creature called the Shrike. Some worship it, some fear it, and some have vowed to destroy it. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to the Valley of the Time Tombs, where the Shrike waits for them. They seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives and have resolved to die before discovering anything less than the secrets of the universe itself. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Scratching A Seven-Year ItchI can honestly say it took me seven years to read this book. Not because it's extremely long--though at 482 pages it's not short either--or because it wasn't interesting--once I started reading I could hardly put it down. The problem was I originally bought the book, but before I could get around to reading it I moved and the book was in a box that was misplaced for four of those seven years. After the box was found I just didn't get around to reading it, in part because my reading tastes had changed ... Read More Rating: - An difficult yet interesting readAllow me to start out by saying that Hyperion by Dan Simmons is one of the strangest books that I have read. Ever. The concepts presented in this book are intriguing, but to the inexperienced sci-fi reader they may be difficult to decipher. The narration switches to each of the main characters who, in turn, tell their story to the rest of the main characters. It's interesting to see how all of the stories eventually intertwine, particularly when seen through various points of view. Unfortunately, ... Read More Rating: - The Hyperion Cantos, vol. 1"Hyperion" is the first part of the Hyperion Cantos, followed by "The Fall of Hyperion". It would be difficult and illogical to try to review these two books separately, because they are clearly two halves of a single story and should be read as such. With "The Hyperion Cantos" Dan Simmons creates a layered and detailed civilization eight centuries in the future, one of the most stunning and multifaceted histories ever produced by an sf writer. The world of the Hegemony of Man -- a Web that spans ... Read More Rating: - Asimov reincarnate? Please.I inhale sci fi; the Foundation Series and Robot series are some of my favorite books of all time. Starship Troopers is another winner in my book. I read this tale with great anticipation-- And found myself bewildered and let down. Confusingly told, badly written, poorly conceived- there's not a lot this book has going for it. As an outline, maybe; as a novel(ette), no way. Also one of the most anticlimactic books I've ever had the misfortune to delve into. Rating: - A Science Fiction MasterpieceNow this wasn't my first Simmons book. I had read "Summer of Night" in high school, and although I eventually forgot what it was about exactly, its grotesque imagery stayed with me for years until I reread it again a month ago. Another Amazon reviewer wondered "[h]ow could the man who wrote the Hyperion books pen this terrible, mindnumbing, unfinishable novel?" LOL. After I finished "Hyperion," my reaction was the opposite: how could the same man who wrote "Summer of Night" be the author of this masterpiece? I ... Read More In association with Amazon.com | |
