From the supplier: Local area networks (LANs) offer a cost-effective means for obtaining access to a number of computing resources. LANs are highly capable of accommodating an electronic mail system that allows two-way communication between students and faculty members. This arrangement promotes freer discussions among participants and encourages them to take advantage of the network to share their views with others. The use of LANs also broadens educational opportunities to potential students and extends the reach of existing academic programs. In addition, LANs simplify the management of computer resources by creating a uniform computing environment. However, several important factors must be considered to ensure the effective operation of LANs. Foremost among these are the LANs' software and hardware requirements. Every computer in the network must be provided with a Network Interface Card or routing devices for sending messages to intended recipients. A network operating system must also be loaded on every station to supplement the traditional operating system. Citation Details Title: Maximizing use of academic computing resources.
