Books for Prep

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - IELTS 6
The IELTS 6 is very useful for our aspiring professional nurses here in the Philippines who plans to go to work in the UK, Canada or the US. This will give them prior knowledge and mental preparation prior to the IELTS test proper.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful
This book is perfect for students who desire to know how the IELTS test is works, though dont expect to find grammar rules or tips, nothing like that, if more, its aimed to people who already have a level. The one i got came with two cds, which have the listening (obviously) tests. It must come with them if you purchase it, cos its part of the SELFSTUDY pack (make sure its the version you are getting) cds do not come with stdents book with answers.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the Best IELTS Products
This is far better than IELTS 4 and 5. Especially, the reading section is tough and very time consuming. This is a must, if you try IELTS academic. Better to purchase with all listening CD's. I'm sure the careful completion of this book will increase your band up to 7 or more.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cambridge IELTS 6
Cambridge IELTS 6 Student's Book with answers: Examination papers from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (IELTS Practice Tests)
In the 10 years I have been training students to take ESOL examinations, I have used most of the existing materials for the preparation of IELTS and I find that the Cambridge IELTS series contains, by far, the best and most reliable practice tests. This refers to the content, level, format and design of the materials, as well as the accuracy of answers, which provide students with a sound knowledge of their skills and a close estimate of the score they may get when they sit the actual test. I have the complete series and I must say that Book 6 and the corresponding CD can definitely be highly recommended for students and teachers.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Precisely what it claims to be
This book is precisely what it claims to be: a collection of 4 IELTS tests with answers. There is no CD-ROM (so if you want to do the listening part you need to also purchase the CD).

In other words, there are no grammatical rules explained, no ramping-up activities, no tips for the actual test, and no strategies on how to optimize the performance in the 4 parts of the test. For all these reasons, this book is absolutely not enough for passing the actual exam.

Even if your grammar is stellar (and you need no book about it) and your listening skills are wonderful (and you need no CD-ROM), you will still need to learn the best strategies in that the IELTS exam format places *heavy* time constraints on you! I suggest "Action plan for IELTS" for finding some neat strategies.

Furthermore, I find the tips inside "Step up to IELTS" just great. A student needs to know (for example) that, as far as what the IELTS examiners are after, it is better to try to use a complex sentence and fail at it than write/speak in simple sentences.
