Books for Prep

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great guide to fine-tuning patient assessment skills
As an instructor in various medical genres as EMT, ACLS and cardiology, I have found this book to be an excellent reference and tool to help fine-tune the art of patient assessment. It was referred to me by a paramedic when I was stationed in Bremerton, WA, and I have subsequently used it over the years not only to help with my own skills, but as a basis for instructing others in pre-hospital and intra-hospital patient assessment. Although I am no longer an EMT, I still used this book frequently in my career as a cardiovascular technician. Sure, the story of the "search for the 60-second EMT" format can be a bit off-setting, yet the lessons taken from the book are ones that can be readily used in the field and can be of tremendous assistance in trying to sift through those obscure or complex situations. A great addition to any home medical library!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Save your money!
I got half way through the book and lost my patience with the senselessness of it. It presents no solid material for veterans or green-sticks and is clearly written by someone who wishes to tell stories instead of present case studies.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good info, but annoying
No doubt the book has good information and includes a quick, systematic approach to patient care. The problem is it's written like the script of a late-night infomercial. Seems like the authors are more interested in the sales pitch of a concept rather than objectively and responsibly writing a medical reference. But it is valuable information so if you can stomach the gratuitously printed narcissism (and I recommend reading in short increments), get that wallet out and buy one for your bookshelf!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - EMS made easy
This is a good book for new EMS people or "old" ones. It gives a good review of interview questions, signs/symptoms, and the underlying process behind disorders. The reading is kept interesting with clinical stories, and a good breakdown of sections (e.g. tox, abd pain, chest pain, syncope, etc.). I like going back from time to time and reviewing the sections. Definately worth buying.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A MUST READ for all new EMTs & Paramedics
Although it's been over two years since I've read (and re-read) this book, I still remember it as being a very useful review. Although its story format is unique, it really doesn't detract from the very valuable lessons that this book has to teach. This is a must-read EMS review for all EMS personnel.
