Books for Prep

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Just enough...
I kind of liked it but for me it is only basic concepts so you need to keep reading from other sources to compliment...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - High yield review
This is the cheaper alternative to "Laughing Your Way" -- and without the annoying mnemonics. I would probably rename this book "pediatric pearls" or "high yield pediatrics" or "pediatric highlights" or even "learn pediatrics in a day (or maybe three at most)"

By the end of my pediatric board exam studying, I found myself using this book quite a bit. I'd give it 3.5 stars (I rounded up). After doing almost 5 years of PREP questions, I realized that this book is very high yield. There are certain associations, facts, "buzzwords" that are repeatedly tested and this book hits most of those topics. The pages are uncluttered, the buzzwords are in bold, there are grey boxes on the pages with "pearls". The book itself is a bit more bulky for its content (since usually only one topic is covered per page) so it is not ideal for carrying around. But it does give a lot of room to write notes.

Pros:
*important AAP guidelines clearly outlined (this is one of the best aspects of the book -- reading the actual guidelines from AAP publications is too time consuming)
*buzzwords and pearls highlighted (the details that the boards use to differentiate between similar diseases)
*page format: easy to read, large font, bullet-format
*quick review of frequently tested topics
*ideal for med students
*good adjunct to PREP (+/- PIR) and pediatric atlas
*uncluttered pages with plenty of space for notes
*affordable
*provides references for each topic
*excellent coverage of: toxins, drugs of abuse, vaccines, medications, genetics, AAP guidelines
*chapters in alphabetical order

Cons:
*not comprehensive
*freqently not clear or specific about single best treatment/management or test
*organization is poor at times: not easy to flip to a specific topic, order of topics within a chapter is not intuitive (i.e. TORCH infections not on consecutive pages)
*little to no pathophysiology covered
*no pictures (but what to you expect for this price?)
*no EKGs/diagrams/radiographs
*not very portable considering limited content -- pages are large and made from heavy paper
*some typos
*inadequate coverage of: sports medicine, ID, developmental milestones (especially motor -- most review books on are inadequate in this area though)
*certain tested topics not mentioned (i.e. posterior urethral valves, ehrlichiosis, morphea)
