- The inspiring story of "the lady with the lamp"I knew that Florence Nightingale was the mother of modern nursing, but until I read this volume in the Our People series I did not know that nursing was not a respected profession in the 19th century. The daughter of a wealthy English family who was born in Florence, Italy, she changed the way nurses care for the sick and injured. Believing she was called by God to do special work, it was while caring for her sick grandmother and others that Nightingale decided to become a nurse. Marc Davis covers the path that led to Nightingale's decision, the training she found, and the inspiration provided by Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to become a licensed physician. Although she achieved early success in advising on how to care for patients during a cholera epidemic that swept London, it was during the Crimean War that she took over the Scutari Barrack Hospital and transformed it into a place where wounded soldiers could actually get healthy. The end of this book deals with Nightingale's legacy, as well as the honors that came to her because of her work; she was the first woman to receive the British Order of Merit. Obvious Florence Nightingale was much more than the founder of the Nightingale School of Nursing, since her influence was felt around the world. Union armies during the Civil War used her methods of hospital management. That is just one of the Interesting Facts that are often found in the margins of this book, along with the informative sidebars. The book is illustrated with mostly historic pictures of Nightingale and her work. The back of this volume has a Time Line, Glossary Terms, and variosu places to look For Further Information. Davis has put together a solid introduction to the life and work of Florence Nightingale for younger readers and if you were to think that she was responsible for saving more lives in the 19th century than any other person on earth, it would be hard to prove otherwise. page 1 of 1
