Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Caribbean History
The book was slow to develop and hard to get in to at first. I did not like the long jumps in time that took place between characters. I liked the book and thought it was a wonderful piece of historical fiction. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and the history of the Caribbean. It is one of the must reads.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - One of my favorite books
I first read this book years ago and I've revisited it as an old friend many times since. Presented as a generational saga, the book is wrapped around a fascinating and little-known historical event-the settlement of the Bahmas Islands by British plantation owners who found their lives after the War for Independence unendurable.

The story is first-rate with characters you care about. The struggle to recreate southern plantation life on the Outer Islands is brought to life but it's the characters who keep you turning the pages.

My book is falling apart so I need to buy a new one!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - incredible
I read this book while stayin in Long Island, Bahamas. Being there made it so real. If you are visiting the Bahamas for any amount of time it is a must read. Clearly one of my favorites.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Writing does not get any more beautiful.
This is perhaps the most perfect book I have ever read. Definitely the best piece of historical fiction. Dealing with a subject not commonly studied it sheds light on the islands, the people, and this moment in history in a rare symphonic way. Sublime.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A book to remember years after it's been read.
Read over 20 years ago this book remains one of the finest. So difinitive you feel like your a part of the story. Generational in nature it defines the changes that naturally come as the years go by. An excellant story.
